\chapter{Sustainable Development Approach}  \label{cha:sustainable}  %Please do not forget to add new symbols to the nomenclature e.g.: \nomenclature{$t_{element}$}{Thickness coefficient of plate \nomunit{[$-$]}}  "Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" \cite{Brundtland}.  Sustainable design is one of the driving thoughts behind this project, for it has to be made sure to not harm people and environment, which is a more and more important topic today as well as in the future.   To achieve this, the design phase, the operation and the disposal can be planned and performed in such a sustainable way.  Several paths can be followed: An important aspect is to limit damage to the environment (during production and lifetime) through life cycle analysis by relying on sustainable energy sources and not use scarce resources~\cite{LCA}. After the regular life of the aircraft, disposal and recycling have to be considered~\cite{Cradle}. A possible use of parts of the aircraft or the entire aircraft for additional tasks would result in a more sustainable end-of-life phase. This can be planned for beforehand.  At the current stage, the sustainable development is mainly shown in the design choices. These are selected in such a way that new technologies or environmentally friendly technologies are promoted preferably. The aircraft is electrically propelled, which is a novel concept for an aircraft of such type. Therefore, new technologies in this field are promoted. Also, the carbon footprint is reduced. Also, a contra rotating propeller was selected that works more energy efficient than single propellers. On top of that, the canard configuration is expected to use less resources than conventional planes, for it has more lift creating surfaces and can thus be flown more efficiently.  Unfortunately, due to the prototype nature of the aircraft, additional use apart from the racing will be limited.  The approach that will be taken to endure a sustainable approach are as following:  \begin{itemize}  \item To set an example for comparable aircraft and prove the working of electrical propulsion in air racing  \item To fly efficiently, not wasting energy  \item To use sustainable gained and developed materials  \item To minimise the impact on the environment  \end{itemize}  These aspects will be considered in the next design steps. Thereby, they will mainly influence the material selection. Also, energy recovery systems will be investigated further to achieve a more sustainable design.  Making air racing more efficient is an important objective of the project. It is expected that the unconventional canard will its electrical propulsion can set an example and attract more and more people, increasing the target area and promoting the sport, as well as sustainable technologies. The aircraft design is therefore planned to serve a greater value besides racing.
