\section{Summary}
In this memo we have explored the required timing resolution for pulsar timing observations with SKA1\_Mid and SKA1\_low. In summary we have done the following:
\begin{itemize}
\item Specified the maximum pulse-phase resolution and effective time resolution that must be supported.
\item Defined the term `effective time resolution'.
\item Specified the maximum DM that must be supported for coherent dedispersion as a function of time resolution.
\item Specified the maximum DM that must be supported for incoherent dedispersion as a function of time resolution.
\item Specified the maximum pulsar spin period that must be supported.
\end{itemize}
Adopting these requirements and definitions will lead to a considerable tighter specification of the SKA1 pulsar timing signal chain than is currently available.
