# Rule 10: Help establish Make data sharing a vital part of  "Data Science" and "Data Scientists" as vital. science practice.  One should not only love one’s data, but one should want others to love those data too. Attitude is crucial for spreading the culture of open data and software, alongside good curation practices. Every day more scientists come to understand why openness and curation benefit us all, but we have not reached the stage where most scientists' communities "demand" levels of effort and funding sufficient to make data-sharing commonplace and essential. What steps can communities take to move toward this tipping point? One important step is to _advocate_ for hiring data specialists and for the overall support of institutional programs that improve data sharing. Make sure not only advanced researchers (e.g., postdocs) experience the pleasures of doing research with freely available data and tools: _explain_ and _show_ the value of well-loved data to graduate and undergraduate researchers. _Teach_ whole courses, or mini-courses, related to caring for data and software, or incorporate the ideas into existing courses. Insist on coverage of data sharing topics in the data science curricula that may be starting in your university.  _Form groups_ specific to your discipline to foster data and code sharing. Hold birds-of-a-feather or special _sessions during large meetings_ demonstrating examples where good sharing practices have led to better results and collaborations. Lead by practicing what you preach. And, don't forget: open collaborations are a good start, but the greater the community the bigger the joint benefits.
