**Figure 1** Two pages from Galilei's Sidereus Nuncius ("The Starry Messenger" or "The Herald of the Stars"), as translated into English. On these pages, Galilei combines data (drawings of Jupiter and its moons), key metadata (timing of each observation, weather, telescope properties), and text (descriptions of methods, analysis, and conclusions). This translation, available at http://homepages.wmich.edu/~mcgrew/Siderius.pdf, is based on the version by Edward Stafford Carlos   (Rivingtons, London, 1880), newly edited and corrected by Peter Barker (Byzantium Press, Oklahoma City, 2004).
