# Rule 5. Link your data to your publications   use your own data citation in your own papers   Papers already have some way to describe provenance. A minimal form of provenance is citations in a paper, and this is why citing the data is so important and easy to do.   You’re going to publish a paper and you want to make the data associated with the paper available. This may include tabular data files, spreadsheets, images, graphs, databases, etc. . collect as many files as possible including data, codes, documentation on parameters, metadata descriptions of your data including licenses. At a minimum, zip them up and post them in a permanent URL. (see rule 3)
