# Rule 2. Publish your data with a persistent online identifier.  Nothing really lasts forever, so "permanent" just means long-lasting. Your personal web site is unlikely to be a good option for long-term data storage, although, storage. Yet,  in the very short run, putting your data there on your personal site  is better than doing nothing. nothing at all.  Online services that will issue a "handle" (hdl) or "digital object identifier" (doi) for your data are much better options, as these identifiers, unlike URLs, will move with data files if they are relocated (even between institutions). Current services issuing hdl and doi identifiers include the Dataverse, FigShare, Zenodo(xx), and Dryad (see URLs belowxx). If you are unsure of how others in your field (see Rule 8) use services like these, seek out an institutional repository (e.g. at your university) and ask experts there (often the librarians) about current best practices.
