It's clear the estimate of transcript initiation has a tremendous amount of uncertainty associated with it. The next step will be to test the     The parts themselves will be placed in the golden Braid public repository     ###Open Workshop   One of us (RS) initiated the Open Workshop as an experiment to bring together the populations of curious laymen, experienced wet biologists, and software engineering talent in the East Bay area, and all three of these groups were represented in the attendees of the workshop. In addition, several working bioinformaticians contributed.     The structure of the workshop came in two phases. The first five meetings each described a category of biological data: chromosomal sequences; individual open reading frames; microarray data; quantitative proteomics data in 2D Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis; and quantitative proteome data from Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectroscopy. In each of these sessions, data was gathered from public sources and participants worked     As a public-scientific interface event, hands on work with data and computers     Participant feedback of the workshop identified areas of improvement and offered direction for future workshops. Although initial interest in the workshop was high, attendance dropped from 25 to 30 participants per meeting to 2 to 4 participants per meeting. Possible reasons for this decline include lack of understanding of the subject matter or technical skills needed to fully participate, inability to commit to weekly meetings, and unclear direction or incentives to continue. Future workshops may be structured into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels that would be more accessible to participants from diverse educational backgrounds, or structured so that participants can work on tasks suited to their abilities. Future workshops may be shorter in length to reduce burn-out. Clarifying the broader significance and goals of project tasks may attract and retain more participants. Another idea is to take on a project with the sole goal of doing that project, rather than anticipating publishable results. As an experiment, the workshop succeeded in bringing together a diverse population containing a range of talent that may serve as a model for future collaborative efforts.
