The system aims to increase driver attention and awareness by offering additional modes of input while reversing. Firstly, it will incorporate a camera and video display which will allow the driver to see behind them while the vehicle is in reverse. This will require control software to initiate the display only while backing up, video handling codecs to relay data from the camera to the display, and control software on the camera itself. Secondly, the system will have a rear-facing radar system which attempts to detect obstacles and provides auditory warnings both to the driver and externally to the obstacles, and in extreme case apply the brakes. This will require software to interpret sensing data, logic to categorize the risk of an obstacle and give an appropriately intrusive notification, control software for both the lights and stereo system of the vehicle for warnings, control software to effect deceleration, and the ability to override the functionality in emergencies.
