UK Power Networks, formerly part of the National Grid, has installed the \href{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-30476591}{first connected storage battery} in Leighton Buzzard. This facility on Woodman Close is part of a \href{http://innovation.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/innovation/en/Projects/tier-2-projects/Smarter-Network-Storage-(SNS)/}{research project} to investigate the real-world potential battery storage. It is large enough to power 1,100 homes for a full-day, but is more intended to smooth out peaks in demand and intermittency in supply.
