DWI generates contrasts on images based on the measurements of the random Brownian motion of water molecules within a voxel of tissue.  Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and white matter tractography based on DWIs have been used to study white matter integrity in the human brain.  Most of the studies on AD using DTI focus on measuring differences in white matter integrity of AD patients against normal controls.  Although there has been several studies with DTI focusing on AD, such studies,  it is still unclear whether it can be considered as a reliable biomarker for AD \cite{Acosta_Cabronero_2012}.
