Figure 1: These images demonstrate the advancements in controlling the growth direction of GaN nanowires from 2000 to 2014. Notice in the first image (taken from \cite{Chen_2000}) that the GaN nanowires are heavily tangled, while in the second image image,  the direction and alignment of the bulk nanowires is controlled through the percentage of Ni to Au in the catalyst system (taken from \cite{Kuykendall_2004}). The photoluminescence spectrum of the nanowires themselves also indicate similar crystal growth structures structures, indicating the nanowires themselves are very similar  (taken from \cite{Chen_2000}).
