A longitudinal study was conducted in Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) mental health services with clients with long term mental health disorders in the Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT). The Case Managers at the North, South, East and West CMHT’s were invited to participate in the study. The West CMHT was provided with KPP interventions while the rest of the teams continued with care as usual. The intervention period was staggered over various time points, and a total of 12 time points were observed and data recorded.  The data were abstracted into spreadsheets and analysed using SPSS using repeated measures ANOVA and generalised estimating equation (GEE).  Knowing the People Planning is a service development tool developed based on the met and unmet needs of the clients. Data collected from the clients about their needs are used for service planning and action plans to meet these needs are created and implemented. The effectiveness of this method is not systematically evaluated until this study.  This study uses HoNOS data to evaluate difference between teams which use KPP and teams which do not use KPP. The HoNOS data collected every 3 months are used over a 3 year period to see the changes.
