The number of scientists increases. Science increases and science  and society become more and more intertwined. In this rapidly changing environment it is important to reflect on the role and the responsibilities of the individuals doing science in the 21st century. I will argue that this should be one of the primary concerns for the scientific community and society at large. This is because it seems likely that the future and survival of humankind relies on the optimization of the scientific output and its relationship with society.
