The second trend is related to our increasing ability to modify the world around us. Science and technology are the tools we use to understand and shape the environment in which we live. While this has been the case for several hundred years, we only recently reach a point where our actions, if misguided, have the potential to seriously damage the fragile environment on which all biological life on Earth depends.  The number of scientists increases and science and society become more and more intertwined.   In this rapidly changing environment it is important to reflect on the role and the responsibilities of the individuals doing science. %in the 21st century.   I would argue that this should be one of the primary concerns for the scientific community and society at large. This is because the future (and probably survival) of humankind relies heavily on the recommendations of the scientific community and its scientific and technological discoveries.
