CdTe PVs have several features which make it especially attractive:
* The cell is produced from polycrystalline materials and glass, which is a potentially much cheaper construction than bulk silicon.
*The chemical and physical properties of the semiconductors are such that the polysilicon thin-films can be deposited using a variety of different * Simple deposition techniques
(see below). have beendeveloped suited for low-cost production.
* CdTe has a bandgap (1.49 eV) which is very close to the theoretically-calculated optimum value for solar cells under unconcentrated AM1.5 sunlight (1.34eV).
* CdTe has a direct band gap leading to a high absorption coefficient ( \( \alpha > 5\times 10^{5} cm^{-1}\) ). A layer of 2µm is enough to absorb around 99% of incident light which translates in less material.
