\label{HIPPO_val}  The HIPPO (HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations) experiment took place between 2009 and 2011, and consisted of 5 campaigns making repeated ascent and descent profiles over the clean Pacific ocean \cite{Wofsy_2011}. Instrumentation on HIPPO measured a number of atmospheric constituents relevant to carbon cycle research, including CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and CO, as well as N$_2$O - all species measured and retrieved by the TCCON. During the research and test flights of HIPPO, several profiles took place over TCCON sites, allowing the in situ aircraft measurements onboard the HIAPER aircraft to be used for validating TCCON column retrievals.  \subsection{HIPPO-II RF7}  During HIPPO-II, RF7 made a missed approach to Wollongong airport, and subsequent ascent to the north over Sydney to above 12,000 m. This occurred on 15 November 2009 on RF7, a flight from Christchurch, New Zealand, to Honiara, Solomon Islands.
