\label{fig:sample-datasets}  Sample figure from a an  \ipython\ notebook illustrating the $\chi^2$ test. The notebook generates a ``realistic'' dataset (left) by constructing a linear relation with normally distributed errors. The middle panel does the same, but the errors are drawn from a distribution with a much smaller $\sigma$ than indicated by the errorbars. The dataset on the right contains two $5\sigma$ outliers. The \ipython\ notebook contains several exercises to guide students' thinking about whether the dataset supports the underlying model.
