\begin{abstract}  In response to an assessment of the learning outcomes for the undergraduate astronomy program at Michigan State University, we have begun implementing changes to the undergraduate astronomy courses.  Here we describe changes made to AST 208, a sophomore-level course for astronomy majors at Michigan State University. The purposes of this document are to document our changes for future editions of the course, to highlight some of the innovative course development being done by the astronomy group, and to stimulate similar activities in other physics and astronomy departments, courses,  both at Michigan State University and elsewhere. \end{abstract}
