\subsection{Synchronization of lecture and lab topics}  AST 208 was formed by merger a laboratory observing course with a lecture-based course on planetary science. This merger was done to use available faculty hours efficiently; it poses, however, a dilemma on how to raise the level of instruction in either component given the small number of contact hours per week for both lecture and lab. In particular, the use of current and archival observatory data in the lab, as described in \ref{s.encounters-with-data}, requires a more rigorous treatment of statistics. To reinforce the lab activities, we converted the first part of the course into a more general discussion of astronomy and statistics. As motivation, we introduce these concepts in the context of detecting exoplanets; this ties this material to the treatment of planetary science in the latter half of the course.
