\section{Why revamp AST 208?}
The undergraduate major not only imparts to students knowledge about a discipline, but
it also
it trains students in the practice of that field.
Astronomy, like all sciences, evolves; and the skills that a student of astronomy is expected to acquire also evolve. For example, we no longer emphasize mastery of arcane recurrence relations for Bessel functions, but we do want students to have proficiency with numerical computation.
Further, the majority of astronomy majors do not become professional astronomers; they do, however, find employment in a variety of STEM fields. For both these reasons, the undergraduate major must impart skills that are broadly applicable.
