\subsubsection{Assessments}  Frequent assessments improve student performance \citep{Laverty_2012}. In AST 208, we give  quizzes roughly every other week. The level of difficulty is comparable to a short homework problem or reading assignment. Many of these quizzes are open-note, but have strict time limits to encourage students to keep up with readings and homework. There is a comprehensive final that covers topics in both the lecture and the lab.
