\subsection{Assessments}  Frequent assessments have been shown to increase improve  student performance \citep{Laverty_2012}. In AST 208, we give  quizzesare given  roughly every other week, and the week. The quiz's  level of difficulty is comparable to a short homework problem or reading assignment. Many of these quizzes are open-note, but have strict time limits to encourage preparation by keeping students to keep  up with readings and homework.
