In addition, the use of real data from a diversity of telescopes gives students first-hand experience in the pros and cons of different observational designs. And finally, inspecting and analyzing real images gives students intimate knowledge of what the night sky looks like, and how technology can improve our view. For example, as part of one lab, students pan around images from the Hubble Space Telescope and pick out tiny details that are not visible from the ground (i.e., that ``star'' in the Orion Nebula is not just a star, but actually a star with a shadowy protoplanetary disk around it!)
