\begin{abstract}  In response to an assessment of the learning outcomes for the undergraduate astronomy program at Michigan State University, we have begun revising our undergraduate astronomy courses.  This white paper describes changes made to AST 208, a sophomore-level course for astronomy majors at Michigan State University. The purposes goals  of this paper are to document our changes for future editions of the course, to highlight some of the innovative course development being done by the astronomy group, and to stimulate similar activities in other physics and astronomy courses, both at Michigan State University and elsewhere. \end{abstract}
