The oxygen consumption of the overlying water alone ranged from -3.5 to 3.1 $\mu mols$ L\textsuperscript{-1} h\textsuperscript{-1}, which translated to an areal flux ranging from -1.9 to 1.7 $\mu mols$ m\textsuperscript{-2} h\textsuperscript{-1}. A negative flux indicates that the oxygen concentration of the water increased during the incubation. Overall the oxygen consumption of the water did not contribute substantially to the total oxygen consumption of the bottles. The maximum oxygen consumption of the water was only 0.5\% of the minimum total oxygen consumption.   Due to technical difficulties with the Winkler titration we were not able to get usable dissolved oxygen measurements from the leached litter experiment. In the leached litter SOD experiment the dissolved oxygen concentration ranged between 225.3 and 312.4 $\mu$mol O\textsubscript{2} L\textsuperscript{-1}, which was similar to what was measured in the litter experiment (see above). The mean ($\pm$ SD) dissolved oxygen concentration of the water in the leached litter SOD experiment increased slightly from 234.4 ($\pm$ 13.7) $\mu$mol O\textsubscript{2} L\textsuperscript{-1} to 294.0 ($\pm$ 7.93) $\mu$mol O\textsubscript{2} L\textsuperscript{-1} between days 2 and 9. The mean ($pm$ ($\pm$  SD) dissolved oxygen concentration of the microcsoms without leaf litter was 262.6 ($\pm$ 31.93) which was virtually identical to the mean ($\pm$ SD) dissolved oxygen concentration of the microcosms with leaf litter of 265.8 ($\pm$ 34.66). The microcosms in the leached litter SOD experiment were incubated at a constant 15.5 \textsuperscript{o}C and the oxygen consumption of the bottles ranged from 360.3 to 788.4 $\mu mol$ O\textsubscript{2} m\textsuperscript{-2} h\textsuperscript{-1} with a median of 567.9 $\mu mol$ O\textsubscript{2} m\textsuperscript{-2} h\textsuperscript{-1}. When the oxygen consumption was normalized to the organic matter mass of the microcosms, we found that the SOD ranged between 27.5 and 68.0 $\mu mol$ O\textsubscript{2} (g organic matter)\textsuperscript{-1} h\textsuperscript{-1} with a median of 41.6 $\mu mol$ O\textsubscript{2} (g organic matter)\textsuperscript{-1} h\textsuperscript{-1}. There were no significant effects (Table \ref{tab:SOD_ANOVA}) of the presence of leaf litter or the days of incubation on the SOD normalized to organic matter content (Fig. \ref{fig:ll.sod}).
