The protocol is an open specification\cite{Goransson_2014} and provides an Application Program Interface (API) for controlling a switch's flow-table. Modern Ethernet switches and routers have common properties between different vendors. They provide switching electronics that switches or routes traffic based on internal flow-tables. This common functionality provides the abstraction that Open Flow provides the common interface to.  The OpenFlow protocol defines the specific messages and message formats exchanged between controller (control plane) and device (data plane). The OpenFlow behavior specifies how the device should react in various situations and how it should respond to commands from the controller" Different network appliances have specific functions such as Firewalls, NAS, Network Access Controls (NAC). These functions are different variations of how flow-tables are expressed. The Open Flow interface specifies The This shows the  intrinsic benefit value  of OpenFlow, by providing  an open protocol.  While OpenFlow is only one of the technologies included under the big tent of SDN, it is the technology most closely associated with what we define as Open SDN. An important tool and catalyst API on commodity hardware to allow  for innovation, flexibility.
