陽, the upper part of the modern Luban defines the good measures for the living. As our data show, this measure hasn’t originally been used to define the measures of tombstones. However, with the professionalization and commercialization of the tombstone production on Penghu and Taiwan, its seems that those carvers who applied also the 陽 measures had a competitive edge over carvers who didn’t, resulting today in an almost complete domination of this practice. Interestingly, the data seem to suggest that the commercialization on Penghu preceded that on Taiwan, a hypothesis we will try to verify in later research.
