The strict molecular clock was first introduced by Zuckerkandl & Pauling \cite{zuckerkandl1962,zuckerkandl1965} and the theory was elaborated on and justified by Motoo Kimura as part of his Neutral Theory of Evolution \cite{Kimura1987}.
