{\bf Top:} Critical field strength $B_c$ required for magnetic suppression of dipole oscillation modes in stars evolving up the RGB, as a function of their frequency of maximum power, $\nu_{\rm max}$. {\bf Bottom:} Corresponding stellar radii. Stars evolve from right to left as they ascent the RGB. The value of $B_c$ has been evaluated at the H-burning shell for modes with frequency $\nu = \nu_{\rm max}$. A star observed to have depressed dipole modes has a minimum field strength of $B_c$ within its core. We have labeled the observed value of $\nu_{\rm max}$ and calculated field strength $B$ for the sub-giant KIC 8561221 (\cite{Garcia_2014}), and the calculated lower limit for the suppressed pulsator KIC 9073950. g
