In general, 3\ts{rd} order spectroscopy experiments employ four-wave mixing: at time $t = 0$, an electric pulse excites a molecule in its ground state. Three more pulses fire at the molecule (at time $t = t_1, t_2, t_3$), designed such that the last pulse forces the molecule back into its ground state.
