There has been some work in this area related with alternative tangible interactions and magnet based interactions. We will be taking the ideas and findings of these papers and using them to build Piknik.  **Tangible Bits**  In the tangible interactions space, "Tangible Bits" attempts to bridge the gap between physical objects and the digital world \cite{Ishii_1997}. It focuses on three concepts: transforming surfaces into an active interface, coupling physical objects with digital information, and the use of ambient media with the digital world.  **Tangible Interaction on Capacitive Multi-touch Display**  "TUIC"\cite{Yu_2011} takes it a step further and allows tangible interaction directly on multi-touch devices. It embeds objects with circuits that simulate touch input to allow the mobile device to detect the object. There are three methods that "TUIC" achieves this, spatial (static touch patterns), frequency (dynamic modulation of touch), and hybrid (a combination of spatial and frequency).  **Tangible Meets Gestural**  "Tangible Meets Gestural" discusses defining new interaction techniques using tokens to explore large data sets. It mentions that physical actions impact thinking and learning in four ways: induction, off-loading, repurposing, and physically distributed learning. (expand on this topic).  1.
