Abstract

Despite its economic advantages the popularity of data storage as a service is low. This is often attributed to the reluctance of many corporations in sharing data without proper security assurance. A comprehensive encryption scheme is a possible solution, but such schemes have been plagued by the decryption overhead. Certain schemes like homomorphic encryption have been proposed which allows the user to write queries on the encrypted data itself. Even though, this does away with the need of decryption, such schemes also have an overhead associated with it, which prevents its usage in a real time environment. We propose a multi stage solution for this problem. First step is data segregation where sensitive data is segregated from the rest. This 'not-so-sensitive data' is next made de-identifiable ensuring privacy preservation. This data is then fed into a data obfuscation algorithm which allows it to be retrieved faster. We are proposing that with such segregation and obfuscation techniques, complemented with possible temporal data mobility capabilities will build confidence and encourage more widespread usage of data storage in cloud.
