Neurologic complications following cardiac surgery are most likely cerebrovascular accidents due to embolism resulting in hemiparesis or hemiplegia. Paraplegia following cardiac surgery occurs due to spinal infarcts or spinal ischemia especially in the setting of aortic dissections or Thoraco abdominal aortic surgery. Quadriparesis following cardiac surgery is a rare entity. That too, Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) as a cause of quadriparesis is very rare. The exact pathophysiology of GBS is not known. Immune-mediated process has been postulated to be the cause of GBS. Here we report a 49 year old male who presented with acute aortic dissection and underwent Bentall procedure following which he developed quadriparesis, diagnosed to be a case of GBS and was successfully treated with intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG).
