Changes in the heart allocation system have led to transplant programs
traveling greater distances for donor organs. At the same time, several
new technologies have emerged to provide improvements in donor organ
protection when compared with traditional strategies. These new
developments have increased the need for a better understanding of risks
associated with donor injury related to various types of ischemia.
