Abstract

An electromagnetic hydrophone made of a thin wire placed in a magnetic field can be used to make pressure field measurement. The characteristics of this type of hydrophone are established using IEC 62127-3 standard. Upper frequency limit depends on wire diameter and is equal to ??? MHz for a 70 \(\mu\) diameter wire. Directional response is flat (difference smaller than ? dB) from -?\({}^{0}\) to -?\({}^{0}\). Signal is linear over pressure from 10 kPa to at least 10 MPa. Excellent resistance to cavitation have been observed. The hydrophone is however sensible to electromagnetic noise. Due to its characteristics, this hydrophone is particularly convenient for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound transducer calibration.
