Abstract

On 10 January, 1863 the London Underground opened its first line to the public. Early ridership levels proved it to be an instant success, and many then sought additional links. This process included securing funding and a formal proposal to Parliament which then required approval. Many proposals never saw the end of the tunnel both figuratively and literally. Due to the constraints of their time, accessibility was never fully quantitatively analyzed for the many additions to the network. This paper seeks to determine the role accessibility played on connect choice in the early stages of the London Underground.
