Abstract

Conducting formative user test sessions are becoming more integrated in game development cycles. However, user tests are not always feasible or affordable for smaller independent game studios, it requires specialised equipment and expertise. Given the recent increase of independent developers, there is a need to adapt games user research methods to conduct fast, easy-to-learn and affordable user tests. Therefore, our research focuses on integrating games user research better into game development cycles in indie development. We explore three case studies of independent game development teams conducting user tests at a game development incubator. Each case study describes how we adapted user testing methods for each particular game and how each method improved its development. The goal of this work in progress (WiP) is to explore how small studios with low budgets benefit from user testing their games and ultimately discuss how to apply GUR methods on smaller scale projects efficiently.
