Both our brain and deep learning models learn from data.  Their success shows that models tuned to data are better than general models.

The image below shows how the brain and deep learning models show similar characteristics. The figure below shows PCA of small patches of the image. The PCA modes look like simple derivative filters similar to that of the receptive fields in the visual primary cortex V1.
