An Occupancy Based Building Performance Studies of Multiple Office Zones in Diverse Climatic Regions: A Co-Simulation Approach

Abstract

Existing building simulation studies incorporating the several building parameters that account static or fixed occupancy profile. It usually leads to the simplified building simulated model; reduce the complexity and simulation run-time. Ultimately, it contributes higher discrepancies between the actual and simulated energy consumption as occupant presence and interactions within the building energy systems are over-simplified and less investigative of real-world situations. So, this study considered an occupancy-based building performance analysis for a prototype six zones office buildings located in three climates (i.e., Hong Kong, London, and Hokkaido). Initially, an agent-based occupancy simulator (OS) was used to simulate the occupant presence and movement to create a realistic occupant schedule for each region. Afterward, occupant behavior- Functional Mock-up Unit (obFMU) along with a BPS tool (i.e., EnergyPlus) have been used to model the behavior and assess their impact on each zone throughout the co-simulation approach. The study provides stochastic nature of occupant presence and movement in buildings as well as zone-wise figures of temperatures (0C), CO2 concentration (ppm), and illuminance level (lux) along with the dynamic behaviour of window, lighting and HVAC usage. The study will help the architects, engineers, and policymakers to recognize the realistic occupant movement, comfort, and energy-saving intention.
