My Learning Vision
Learning is a complex process that refers to different actors being the teacher (the person who put the learning dispositif together), the learner(s) and the object of the learning (the knowledge) that may take place in a specific location (a classroom for instance), in a certain timeframe.
Any knowledge acquisition requires time and are a long term venture.
The learning process is spread across all life areas and very often implies a long term commitment from the teacher and the learner which means that the results may not be immediate and obvious.
The teacher's role is in my opinion to nurture the learning process by offering a temporal space and an adapted location. He/She also needs to be able to control the learning environment as well as evaluate the learners’ work through adapted tools. Moreover, the teacher has to assess the students’ level therefore offering and the most adapted strategy to the type of public in front of her/him.
Our personal experiences regarding our learning abilities in our childhood and our professional experience will definitely influence our way of learning and teaching once adult. In the first place I would say that our past or present learning difficulties show that the learning process has nothing to do with a supposed innate nature. We all learn through different supports and even the nature of what is taught is changing constantly. (In my discipline, computational modelling in geosciences, for instance the subject itself did not exist 30 years ago). So thanks to my own learning experiences, I have perceived that only patience, practice, exercice and motivation would be the core values all learners would have to succeed. The teacher on the other hand has to explain, clarify and pose the subject in a way that would nurture the learners’ motivation and interest.
