Abstract

In the year 2050, the landscape of energy will remain largely the same as it is today. Total energy production will likely double from to around , mainly due to economic growth and industrialization in the developing world.

Fossil fuels will remain the prominent source of energy production, holding steady at around 3/4 of the total world energy production. Increased interest in solar power technologies shows that it has much potential for growth, but it will probably not reach the 10s of terawatts scale of fossil fuels by 2050. Breakthroughs in nuclear power hold the most promise for drastically changing the energy landscape, but these are even less likely to be implemented at scale before 2050.
