My name is ML I am with WUST.  As you can see from the list of authors  my collaborators come from Opole University and a private enterprise Vital Medic Education. Computer simulation I am going to show you today were done by my PhD student KK and the undergraduate students Michal Adamski and Katarzyna Fojcik. In other words, in most cases when I say we I mean they.
In this presentation I would like to demonstrate how virtual reality may be used for planning and preparation for   neurosurgical intervention as well as in neurosurgical training.
Slide 1. Let us begin with a rhetorical question.  The purpose of lengthy pilot training is to minimize probability of the loss of hardware.  Sophisticated flight simulators play a pivotal role in this process.  Now we paraphrase this question ..
Slide 2. It turns out that this not a rhetorical question anymore. The answer is quite a few.
Neurosurgery is   the most technically demanding surgical specialty which requires unique set of skills such as  good visual-motor coordination, excellent imagination and spatial awareness. Physical and mental endurance are also indispensable.  Neurosurgery is a very precise work performed under enormous pressure and  with little room for error.         Even though  a human life is at stake training of young neurosurgeons seems to be outdated  when compared with pilot training and starts with observation of maneuvers performed by a mentor. This is followed by  supervised  independent maneuvers.
Slide 3.  Let me show you how intricate neurosurgery can be.   Intracranial aneurysm  is a cerebrovascular disorder in which weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery causes a localized dilation or ballooning. The rupture of an aneurysm causes internal bleeding resulting in death or severe neurological impairments.

There are two treatment options:
In Surgical clipping  the flow of blood  is stopped by putting the clip at the base of aneurysm. This is done  by craniotomy. After clipping, a catheter angiogram or CTA can be performed to confirm complete clipping.
In  Endovascular coiling aneurysm is filled with platinum coils.     A catheter is inserted into the femoral artery, and passed through blood vessels into the cerebral circulation. Coils are pushed into the aneurysm, or released into the blood stream ahead of the aneurysm. Upon depositing within the aneurysm, the coils expand and initiate a thrombotic reaction within the aneurysm.
Slide 5
In this slide you can see the CT and MRI scans of a patient who complained of intermittent loss of vision in the left eye.  This was caused by the ophtalmic artery aneurysm which pressed against the the optical nerve disrupting its function.
If you are a physician you can hardly overlook it. The rest of us can barely see the pathological changes.
