Survival or Growth

To be Immortal, or not to be, that is the question for each cell

I can not read the whole article. Give me the message in short.

It is possible to extend health and lifespan by taking Low carbohydrate / High fat diet. Biology is simpler than it seems.

“For primitive beings like us, life seems to only have one single purpose. Gaining time. And its going thru’ time, seems to be also the only real purpose of each of the cell in our bodies. To achieve that aim, the mass of the cells that make up earth worm and human beings has only 2 solutions. Be Immortal…or to reproduce.”
“If its habitat is not sufficiently favorable, or nurturing, the cell will choose immortality, in other words, self-sufficiency and self management. On the other hand, if the habitat is favorable, they will choose to reproduce — that way, when they die, they hand essential information and knowledge to the next cell, which hands it down to the next cell, and so on. Thus knowledge and learning are handed down, through time.” —Professor Norman in the film ’Lucy’

Are there any short and simple ideas in cell biology that if used can increase our health and lifespan?

All Life is organized at level of cells and each cell can be viewed as an independent entity. There are two major modes of operation of cell that can explain much of biology. These modes are conserved throughout the evolution as they concern the basic problem of life.

  1. Survival mode

  2. Growth mode

In absence of food the cell operates in survival mode. In survival mode the main objective is to save energy and use all the biomass available to cell efficiently. Oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid oxidation are activated and glycolysis is repressed. Autophagy is activated and fatty acid synthesis is repressed. Most of the cells in normal tissues are in quiescent/survival mode. some examples(out of many) are Treg cells, resting T cells, memory T cells and stem cells.
