Long-term risk of venous thromboembolism after a symptomatic arterial event in an elderly population
The concept of venous and arterial thrombosis as two separate entities has been challenged over the last years (Prandoni 2009). Evidence from basic studies demonstrates shared pathological pathways (i.e.: endothelial dysfunction or injury, increased in coagulation factor levels, inflammation) (Mari 2008, Tsai 2002, Tofler 2005), while data from clinical studies show some common clinical risk factors (i.e.: age, obesity, smoking) (Mi 2016) and therapeutic efficacy with the same antithrombotic agents (Becattini 2012).
