Abstract

Background: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, also known as n-3 PUFAs, have been proved to benefit the cardiovascular system, The purpose of this study was to see how n-3 PUFAs affected the progression of endothelial lesions in coronary arteries in patients with CHD and to determine possible mechanisms. Methods: We searched the Embase database, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trial, CNKI, and published papers (searched on August 5, 2021 for data published from the database’s inception to September 2021). We extracted each indicators standard mean difference (SMD) of endothelial lesions in coronary arteries: diameter of the narrowest fragment of the coronary artery, content of endothelins in blood vessels (VWF% and sVCAM-1), and volume of coronary atherosclerosis plaques and their subclassifications. Result: This review included data from twelve articles, which included twelve clinical trials and 2312 patients with CHD or assessed to be with high risk of CHD by the original researchers. We finally concluded that n-3 PUFAs can reduce lesions of the endothelial in patients with CHD by reducing the diameter loss of the narrowest fragments of the coronary arteries (SMD 1.211 [95%Cl 0.179—2.242]) and reduce the increase of atherosclerotic plaques volume in coronary arteries (mm 3) (SMD -0.305 [95%CI -0.574—0.035]), including the volume of the lipid plaque, a subclassification in atherosclerotic plaques (SMD -2.495 [95%CI -4.712—0.279]). Conclusion: To summarize, n-3 PUFAs can reduce endothelial lesions in patients with coronary heart disease, thereby preventing the occurrence of coronary heart disease.
