Collective dynamics of 'small-world' networks (1998)
by Duncan J. Watts and Steven H. Strogatz
One of the foundational papers of modern network science, this paper proposed a model of random graph generation which produces networks with small-world properties, i.e., a graph in which most nodes are not neighbors of one another, but most nodes can be reached from every other node by a small number of hops or steps.
